Personal

Twice, just to be sure

[View from a train window]

As I waited at Rainham station on Sunday for the train that would take me back to my car, I realised that by the time I'm done with all this coastwalking I'll have completed two circuits of the country: once in each direction.

The first - the anticlockwise circuit - I'll have made on foot. The clockwise one I'll have completed by bus, taxi and rail since at the end of each day's walking I have to make my way back to where I've parked the car.

And yesterday, while making an aside comment about the Misery Line, it dawned on me that with the current level of interest in our ageing public transport networks in the UK, the story told by these return journeys is perhaps as interesting as the walking itself.

The only obstacle to reading the story will be seeing through my exhaustion at the end of a day outside.
